Peter Schmidt is the President of the European Economic Social Committee’s (EESC) Sustainable Development Observatory since April 2018. Born in 1962, his first profession was cheesemaker. After, he was regional officer trade union NGG (Food and Catering Union, DGB) for 27 years, in charge of dairy industries and bakeries. Since 2014, he has been a member of EESC group II workers. From 2015 to March 2018, he was the president of the EESC Permanent Study Group on sustainable food systems. In 2017, he was rapporteur for the EESC opinion on « Civil society’s contribution to the development of a comprehensive food policy in the EU ».
